Welcome to the Cakes & Ale website.

Regrettably, the café has had to close. Please see our blog for an explanation why.

Eating and drinking with friends and family is the heart of a good life.

We love to travel and pass the time in cafes and bars that stand out from the crowd, watching the world go by. Our dream is to create the kind of licensed café we'd love to spend time in, capturing the best features of all we've seen and experienced.

Cafe life image

So... we've transformed an old, empty shop in Old Town, Swindon into a new café that we hope feels as if it's always been there. Old Town is a great place, full of interesting shops, restaurants and bars with the feel of a lively village or busy high street. We want to be an important part of it. Cakes and Ale is a place where you can relax, chat, read, work... whoever you are and whatever you need to do, any time of day. We hope you'll feel at home the minute you walk in.

Summer opening times

Sunday and Wednesday: 10am till 4pm
Thursday - Saturday: 10am till 10pm
Tuesday: 10am till 4pm (school holidays only)

We'll be opening on Sundays from 6th April 2014, serving a new brunch menu which will include many of our existing breakfast items with some new choices, too.

Why "Cakes and Ale"? Well, you may have spotted that it's a phrase from Shakespeare - Twelfth Night, to be precise - but it doesn't just mean what it says... it stands for pleasure, fun, indulgence - the good things in life...

We sell cakes and ale, of course, but also breakfast, lunch, high tea and supper (and wine)...

We are now open to the public.

We'll keep you posted on developments.
